Course Synopsis: :This course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required for Certificate in Environmental Law. It integrates theoretical learning, group discussions, case studies, presentations, role-plays with interactive workshops designed to enhance professional competence and workplace readiness.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) of the Course: After successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to

Course Content :Module 1: Introduction to Environmental Law (2 weeks – 1 credit)

  • Definition, scope, and importance of environmental law
  • Principles of environmental law (precautionary, polluter pays, sustainable development)
  • Historical evolution of environmental law globally and locally

Module 2: International Environmental Law & Conventions (3 weeks – 2 credits)

  • Key international treaties and conventions (Stockholm, Rio, Paris Agreement)
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
  • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)
  • Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Basel Convention on waste

Module 3: National Environmental Legislation (3 weeks – 2 credits)

  • National Environmental Act (example: Sri Lanka or local equivalent)
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations
  • Air, water, and soil pollution control laws
  • Wildlife, forestry, and coastal conservation legislation

Module 4: Enforcement & Compliance (3 weeks – 2 credits)

  • Role of courts, tribunals, and environmental agencies
  • Public interest litigation and citizen rights
  • Role of NGOs and civil society in environmental protection
  • Case studies on successful/failed enforcement

Module 5: Emerging Issues in Environmental Law (2 weeks – 1 credit)

  • Climate change and carbon law
  • Environmental justice and indigenous rights
  • Corporate environmental responsibility and green laws
  • Sustainable development and renewable energy regulation

Module 6: Applied Project / Moot Court (3 weeks – 3 credits)

  • Simulation of an environmental litigation case (moot court)
